Rick is a long time Buddhist practitioner as well as a psychiatrist and neuroscience researcher at UC Davis.
Talk Description: It is the nature of brains to adapt and change in response to new experiences. This is called neuroplasticity. Memories, like perceptions, are constructed with a large contribution from expectations & prior knowledge. Memories are built to emphasize “meaning”. When the meaning of a memory changes, the memory changes. Present experience creates memory, which when arising again into experience, leads to an updated memory Retrieval followed by updating prior to reconsolidation — changes the stable store.
