Mountain Stream hosts a day of meditation held in the tradition of Insight Meditation (Vipassana). Vipassana is known as a vehicle for mindfully opening the heart, seeing clearly and embodying our present-moment experience.
All levels of practitioners are welcome. The daylong includes periods of sitting and walking meditation with Dharma teachings from Adam. There will be time for questions but most of the day is held in Noble Silence. As mental chatter subsides, we have more capacity to listen deeply to our heart’s inner wisdom.

Dana: During the daylong, there is an opportunity to offer a financial donation to Adam as part of the Buddhist practice of dana (the practice of giving and receiving). All offerings are gratefully received and support the continuation of the Buddha’s teachings.

Ken Bradford - Difficult Divine Messengers: Befriending the wolfpack of anxiety, guilt & despair

10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Cost: Sliding Scale $60 - $90. No one turned away for lack of funds. Limited partial scholarships are available.

Description:
The Buddha spoke of sickness, old age & death as Divine Messengers that inspired him to seek a deeper awakening. These physical wake-up calls are joined by psychological sister emissaries of anxiety, despair & guilt. If we listen properly to what these existential messengers have to say, they have special power to open us to the essential nature of our mind.

But if we identify with these disturbing mindstates, thereby solidifying a story of me, rather than awakening us, they entrap us in compulsive thinking and negative self-talk. When that happens, divine messengers can turn demonic, as lucid existential anxiety dulls into fear & worry, genuine remorse degrades into self-blame & shame, and the sadness of heartfelt despair devolves into heartless, self-criticizing depression.

Leading up to the daylong, there will be 3 evening talks & discussions – In-person and Virtual - addressing each messenger:
March 11, 6:00 to 7:30: Existential anxiety vs. Neurotic worry & fear
April 8, 6:00 to 7:30: Sadness & despair vs. Numbing depression
May 13, 6:00 to 7:30: Genuine guilt vs. Toxic shame

This daylong is devoted to more deeply opening to and befriending these difficult mindstates. Through self-inquiry, guided and open meditation and discussion, we will explore the difference between being opened by emotions versus being dominated by them. This is difference between letting e-motions flow in heightened wakeful awareness, versus grasping on and making ourself ill by identifying with them or trying to block them.

Bio- Ken Bradford is a contemplative yogin, author and Dharma teacher integrating a wide arc of Buddhist, Dzogchen and psychological thought and practice. His heart teachers include Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, Joseph Goldstein, Ruth Denison and Tsoknyi Rinpoche, among others. Formerly, he maintained a psychotherapy practice in the San Francisco Bay area and was Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy University and CIIS. His publications include Opening Yourself: The Psychology and Yoga of Self-liberation (2021); The I of the Other: Mindfulness-Based Diagnosis & the Question of Sanity (2013); and Listening from the Heart of Silence: Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy, Vol. 2 (2007, with John Prendergast); as well as numerous peer-reviewed articles intertwining psychology and spirituality. Website: www.authenticpresence.net

Dana: During the daylong, there is an opportunity to offer a financial donation to Ken as part of the Buddhist practice of dana (the practice of giving and receiving). All offerings are gratefully received and support the continuation of the Buddha’s teachings.

Cost: Sliding Scale $60 - $90
Where: In Person only, Nevada City Insight Center, 710 Zion St, Nevada City, CA 95959

Description: The fulsome energies of Spring are emerging. Life’s renewal celebrating the joy of its own vibrancy. What better time to connect to the wellspring of gratitude that is always available to us as practitioners of the dharma. Gratitude is not only the absence of wanting any more or less from the moment, but actually bubbling over with happiness at that relief. This is a taste of the awakened state the Buddha tells us is our birthright. During our day together we will discover our access to gratitude even in challenging times, and also feel it as a direct experience. We will see how happiness not for only ourselves, but also for others, is the truest form of gratitude that leads to awakening and liberation.

Bio: Bruce Pardoe’s personal healing journey with complex trauma led him to develop the radically gentle Heart Fluency method for engaging emotional wounds and afflictive patterns as portals to our essential well-being and happiness. Heart Fluency combines neuroscience and the unconditional nourishment of a healing awareness in an uplifting, heart-centered approach.

For more than 40 years Bruce has been navigating and facilitating the path of inner healing. After spending over two years on silent retreat he became a meditation teacher in the Vipassana tradition of Buddhism. He has completed Spirit Rock’s Meditation Center’s 2 year Community Dharma Leader training and has studied extensively in Asia in the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism and Advaita. Bruce has also trained in Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement and Hakomi’s body-centered psychotherapy.

Dana: During the daylong, there is an opportunity to offer a financial donation to Ken as part of the Buddhist practice of dana (the practice of giving and receiving). All offerings are gratefully received and support the continuation of the Buddha’s teachings.

What to bring: Please bring a bag lunch.

Outline:
Why does our progress in practice, and the use of practice in everyday life, seem to stall and lose its value or power?
Why do we seem to have significant practice Insights and breakthroughs , large and small, but are unable to integrate them into the way we live?
Why can some teachings or practice methods seem so clear and meaningful, but seemingly  prove ineffective in our regular practice and life?
These common experiences can result in uncertainty, confusion, doubt and disappointment. They can easily turn into obstacles to practice if not worked with skillfully.
This daylong retreat will involve a relaxed exploration of these questions and potentially troubling states of mind. Participants will explore a number of recommendations for working more skillfully with them.

The day will be appropriate for all levels of experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper and your own lunch.

Cost: Sliding Scale $50 - $75. Limited partial scholarships available.
Registration required and includes all three days of the course series
To register, contact Robyn.hennon@mtstream.org

Course description: As we face increasing uncertainty and social and environmental losses, we are asked to delve into the depths and breadths of our spiritual lives and face these times with compassion, integrity and clear seeing. How do we, as critical scholar Donna Haraway suggests, "stay with the trouble of living and dying in response-ability on a damaged earth"?

To become response-able is to become responsive, and responding entails opening to our lines of connection with self, kin and earth. In this class series we will explore our relationships to our planetary crises from a place of inner wisdom, spiritual resource and emotional resilience. Each class will include guided meditation, a short talk, and participatory exercises to help us gain clarity, confidence, and community in moving forward together.

Bio: Kirsten Rudestam has been practicing vipassana meditation in the Theravadan tradition since 2001 and teaching since 2005. She has a PhD in Environmental Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz where she studied climate resilience and environmental justice. She has twenty years of experience offering field-based and classroom-based college courses in environmental studies and sociology, and is a facilitator for Joanna Macy's Work that Reconnects. She, Gil Fronsdal, and Susie Harrington are the co-founders and core faculty for the Sati Center's Buddhist Eco-Chaplaincy training program.

(In Person) Relaxed & Awake Half Day with Tracy Lease & Miyu Tamamura

A 3-hour Half Day Retreat with Tracy Lease & Miyu Tamamura
Relaxed & Awake - Welcoming In The New Year: Expanding Our Heart Capacity through The Five Invitations
In-person program at Mountain Stream Meditation, Nevada City Insight Center
Sunday, January 14, 2024
1:00 to 4:00 pm

When we bring our whole self forward, we include our brokenness. We make room for the blemishes as well as purity, strength as well as vulnerability, success as well as screwups.  Judgment focuses on what’s wrong; it feeds an “either/or” mentality.  Embracing wholeness is a loving act of reclamation, a “both/and” way of meeting life.  Frank Ostaseski

We invite you to bring your whole-self to this retreat and, in doing so, to expand your heart’s capacity. Together we will greet the New Year, drop into our hearts, align with our intentions, and invite the gifts of the New Year to emerge from the inside and out.

This retreat was inspired by Frank Ostaseski’s book, “The Five Invitations: Discovering what death can teach us about living fully.”  The cofounder of the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco, Frank has paused on the precipice of death with more than a thousand people. From these experiences he learned what many, in those vulnerable moments, valued most in life. From these experiences Frank offers us five Zen-influenced invitations to help us live fully.

We will practice these “Five Invitations” in community, through the flow of Qigong and breath, various meditations, contemplations, and restorative yoga. These hours will be deeply supported by the therapeutic vibrations of crystal singing bowls and moments of silence.

No prerequisite is necessary to attend this retreat. You are welcome to read the book to deepen your experience. Or, perhaps the retreat will inspire you to read the book later. Regardless, everyone and all levels are welcome!

The Historical Buddha taught that finding deep satisfaction, enjoyment and nourishing happiness is essential to living well and progressing on the path, as well as diminishing suffering. These elements of healing and becoming whole are not, in other worlds, something we experience only after we have “crossed the river of suffering.” This one-day retreat will explore how Buddhist psychology, and specific teachings and methods, help us embody this way of understanding practice and life. The day will be led by Dennis Warren, founding teacher of Sacramento Insight Meditation. For further biographical information go to https://sactoinsight.org/about-us/faculty/

Bio: Dennis Warren is the founding teacher of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He has maintained a daily meditation practice in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition for over 30 years. Since 1998, Dennis has taught Insight Meditation and mindfulness practices in residential retreat, educational, medical, corporate and community settings. He is a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is certified as a Mindfulness Teacher, Professional Level (CMT-P), by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. He is a graduate of the professional trainings in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, and a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. read more

Foundational to the path of the Bodhisattva is lojong practice: training the mind & actuating loving-kindness. This involves both gradual practices of accepting and releasing disturbing emotions and mental fixations one by one, and the non-gradual way of recognizing that the solidity of self-fixations are not as solid as they seem. The process of gradually letting go respects the relative truth of everyday, dualistic vision, emphasizing the cultivation of compassion. While non-gradual release respects the non-dualistic truth of empty-openness: absolute bodhicitta, With this awareness, it becomes possible to abide in the ever-fresh wakefulness and spontaneous compassion of natural openness.
This daylong is devoted to the way of openness. It will include teaching, guided meditation, self-inquiry and discussion. It addresses Point 2 of the 7 point mind training, focusing on slogans 2–6.
Recommended text: Training the Mind and Cultivating Loving-kindness by Chogyam Trungpa. Edited by Judith Lief.

“To live in the present moment is a miracle. The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green Earth in the present moment, to appreciate the peace and beauty that are available NOW. “ Thick Nhat Hanh

The focus of our retreat is to practice arriving in the present moment and then to sustain deep connection, with full awareness and presence, through various creative practices. We will be using the Five Keys inspired by David Richo in his book How to be an Adult in Relationships.
