Laura Rosenthal - Practical Equanimity
Thursday July 29, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm (PDT)
In Buddhist practice, equanimity (upekkha) is one of the four brahmaviharas (“divine abidings”), one of the seven factors of awakening, and one of the ten paramis: the perfections of mind/heart that, in legend, the Buddha himself practiced over many lifetimes on the path to awakening. It is sometimes spoken of as evenness of mind, nonreactivity in the face of life’s ups and downs. At first blush, this quality may seem unattainable as we navigate the “worldly winds” of events and circumstances that are often outside our control. Or we may misunderstand equanimity as indifference or numbness, a failure to engage with what’s real. Let’s take some time to explore equanimity not as the mythical end point of an arduous trek but as a practice, an intention, and a possibility we can engage with, just as we are, in accessible and practical ways, in the midst of our everyday lives.
