Teacher: Bruce Pardoe
Topic: Integrating the Selflessness of the Body and Our Humanity
We can so easily take our bodies for granted. They are familiar. At its core, a sense of being a separate individual self is our deepest familiarity. But when, through injury or illness, our bodies stop performing in familiar ways, we experience their functioning and conditionality in sometimes shockingly different ways. Another translation for the term “annata,” or not self, is ungovernability. At this naked level of being an organism, I, the ungovernability and thus the selflessness of the body, is revealed clearly and directly. That can be an inspiration for practice. But how do we also hold that with respect for the tenderness and fragility of our humanity? For those parts of ourselves that get tired and scared and whiny? It turns out that those parts are selfless as well, and when we can open to all of it, some part can relax.
