Ken Bradford: What Is Basic Sanity?
Psychology has a lot to say about insanity, having compiled a vast compendium of 'mental disorders' (in the DSM). But it has less to say about sanity in general, and barely recognizes the potentiality of basic, unconditioned sanity in particular. This and a follow-up talk on November 6 will explore 2 kinds of sanity. One is the usual, everyday sort conditional to the society we find ourself in. A person may be considered crazy or insane if they do not accord to the range of normality of consensus reality. Adapting to a social reality opens the way for us to survive and thrive. But that may also mean we are conforming to a sick society, participating in that sickness. There is another kind of sanity, more basic, far-reaching and unconditioned. Psychology does not well understand this sanity, called bodhi: the open-ended, unconditional, inherently liberating intelligence the Buddha discovered.
