Mountain Stream Receives Grant
Mountain Stream is very pleased to announce that we received a grant from the Nevada County Relief Fund in the amount of $5,000. We qualified along with 24 other small businesses, throughout the county, heavily impacted by COVID-19.
For the safety of community members, teachers and staff, on March 15, 2020, the Mountain Stream Board of Directors made the decision to suspend all in-person programming. Now, instead of meeting in our beautiful temple (the Nevada City Insight Center) we are offering virtual weekly meditation groups via Zoom. While the technology allows for a wider attendance - folks are showing up from as far away as Japan, Israel and Hawaii - we continue to fall short of the number of people and donations we would normally have had, pre-pandemic.
In these unprecedented times we are presented with challenges and opportunities. It is exciting to be learning and using new technologies as a means to connect with people from around the world, but we are facing a decrease of dependable income. As a nonprofit, our main source of income is donations. Our on-line programming is falling way short of being able to support our small part-time staff and keeping up with the costs of maintaining our facility. This grant has provided us with an opportunity and will help Mountain Stream to remain operational until the time comes when we can open the temple, resume in-person programs, and use the new skills we’ve learned for a broader on-line presence.
The NevCo Relief Fund is made up of a number of partners including Nevada County, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, Sierra Business Council, Center for Nonprofit Leadership, and the Economic Resource Council. More than 100 small businesses applied for this cycle of micro-grants. A few of the other businesses awarded grants include: Sierra Theaters (Del Oro), Miner’s Foundry Cultural Center, Neighborhood Center of the Arts, Partners Family Resource Centers, and KVMR, our local community radio station.
To be one of the 25 recipients to receive this grant is an honor and a validation that our mission and values are an important resource in this community and beyond.
